For the past few months, I have begun to feel the nudging of the Holy Spirit about "gossip". Not just the talking-about-other people kind, but the kind that you find in the Entertainment section of MSN, or People magazine, or whatever. It was easy to tell myself that reading that stuff was just part of being "aware" of the world I live in. But it's appalling how easy it is to waste time reading about things that have no impact on me...nor should they.

Yesterday in staff meeting, Amy and Kelly were "de-briefing" us about staff conference, sharing things they learned. One of the points that one of the speakers made is that while society can be condemning of pornography, they are much more accepting of "gossip" which can be as damaging to women as porn is to men.

That was the clincher for me. I am making a conscious decision to stay away both from gossip and "social porn". The Bible is clear that we are to fill our minds with the good stuff.
Philippians 4:9 (from, surprise, surprise, The Message)

Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious-the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.

So I changed my home page from msn.com to cnn.com, where I see what is going on in the world, but am not tempted to scroll down and click on entertainment. When I took Meg to the dentist last night, I ignored the "Prensa Rosa" magazines (Spanish equivalent of People type magazines) even though I have looked at them before to clue me in to Spanish culture.

Anyway, it feels good.

Since coming home, I have been using the Celtic Daily Prayer book again and I am enjoying it so much. It has been great.

i think this is is a great challenge and one that i will begin to think about too.

i spend lots of time on said computer and when i'm done reading blog posts and things that really interest me i find myself drifting to the 'social porn' as you called it (great name btw).

do i really need to know who paris hilton is dating or what britney called her baby? no. it's just a time waster, not necessarily 'bad' but definately not 'best'... something to think about. thanks for the kick in the pants!

ps - i love that you are intentionally planting something that has god's hand on your chin and not the thumb in your back - beautiful!!

Hey Heidi, yeah, it's not so much that knowing what Britney called her baby is bad (what did she? JK!)it's that it takes away from other things. Often I find I spend way more time reading junk online than my Bible, and that just has to stop!

Anyway, glad it resonated with you too. Hugs.

And Amy, I'm glad you're feeling it too :)
